Sri Saraswathi Shishu Mandir was proposed to our founder through a previous student, currently residing in the United States, as a school that we could potentially sponsor. Day also learned of recent flood damage sustained by the school that they could use assistance with addressing. This is a boarding school, this means that these children are living at the school instead of with their families and therefore need more assistance than is typically provided by the Fortune Fund. Currently, the school only has 32/33 students enrolled between 1st and 10th grade (US Grades).
During a recent trip to India in February 2023, Day took the opportunity to visit the school, accompanied by his wife and a few S2Tech employees and their families. This visit allowed him the chance to understand the challenges being faced by these tribal children, as well as their community needs. Much of the students school day is being taken up with farming and groundskeeping responsibilities with limited time being devoted to more traditional classroom learning. When asked what was needed for the school, their main request was rice as food resources are scarce in this community and many of the students were struggling to get adequate nutrition.
Day is envisioning a completely transformed Shishu Mandir where the school is one of the top schools in India for educating tribal children and the community has become self-sustaining with its own resources. He has since developed both a short-term and long-term plan for facilitating these goals. Please check out the sponsor-a-student page to find out more about these plans and how you can sponsor one of the students at this school.
